Marcellina and the Monarchs

Marcellina and the Monarchs is a Southern California-based band, consisting of psychedelic, neo-soul, alternative, jazz, and rock music. They are a unique and down-to-earth group, with a strong sense of connection within their community.

The band came to me looking for a graphic to represent them and use for their merchandise (stickers, t-shirts, posters). It was specified that they wanted a black-and-white design that included three monarch butterflies flying through two mountains. 

This design needed to capture their funky and artistic style. I took a stylized approach to the mountains, bringing a sense of free-flowing fluidity to a typically rugged subject. The monarchs were a very crucial symbol to the client, they were created with detail and symmetry, able to be utilized on their own for a more simplified graphic.
